I struggle with oily hair, and I believe it stems from my desperate need to shower every day. I've tried everything I can think of to get myself out of the habit of a daily shower, but I cannot seem to break it. I feel nasty when I don't wash my hair every day, which brings me back to being oily. So today I thought I would do research in to what the internet suggests for oily hair, specifically DIY, that way you don't have to go out and buy a million products. Let's check them out!

Apple Cider Vinegar

According to my research, the acetic acid contained in apple cider vinegar will help to balance the pH of your scalp, which will decrease the secretion of too much oil and and get rid of oil build up. It will also give you soft and shiny hair.

How do I use it?

I have two options for you: a rinse for after your shampoo and a hair mask.

Hair Rinse: Add 3 Tablespoons of ACV to a cup of water, and after shampooing with a mild shampoo, apply the mixture to your hair and leave it on for a few minutes before rinsing it away. This will help get rid of product and oil build up on your scalp. Repeat two to three times per week.

Hair Mask:

  • 1/4 Cup Apple Cider Vinegar

  • 1 Juiced Lemon

  • 1 Tablespoon of Honey

Whisk ingredients together or blend them in a food processor, the apply to damp hair. If you have long hair you might want to tie it up. Place a towel or shower cap over your hair and let the mask sit for 30 minutes. After the time has elapsed, rinse with shampoo and conditioner. Repeat once a week.

Lemon Juice

Lemons contain a ton of vitamins and minerals that can help with lots of different scalp and hair problems. Similar to Apple Cider Vinegar, the acid in lemons decrease the amount of oil being secreted by the pores on your scalp, which will obviously help anyone with excess oil.

How do I use it?

Here is an easy recipe to help reduce the oils in your hair:

Add the juice of two lemons to a cup of distilled water. If you want an extra little boost, add a tablespoon of honey. Apply this to your hair and scalp while massaging it in for 5 minutes. Let it sit for another 5 minutes then rinse with lukewarm water. Repeat 3 times a week for best results.

Black Tea

Black teas contain tannic acid, an astringent that will prevent the build up on excess oils and products on the scalp.

How Do I Use It?

This is an easy hair rinse using Steeped Black Tea:

Add one to two tablespoons of black tea leaves in to a cup of water. Boil this for 10 minutes, then let it cool until it is room temperature. You can also steep a tea bag or two if you don't have loose tea.

Once the tea is cooled, strain the tea leaves and apply to your hair, massaging it into your scalp. Leave it on for 10 minutes, then wash it out with a mild shampoo. Repeat 2 to 3 times per week.

Aloe Vera

Aloe, with its soothing properties, is a great product to use for healthy, strong hair. It contains vitamins, minerals and enzymes to help detoxify the scalp and reduce oil.

How do I use it?

Add one Tablespoon of Lemon Juice and one Tablespoon of Aloe in to one cup of a mild shampoo. Wash your hair with this, leaving it for a few minutes before rinsing it away. You can use this whenever you feel like you're extra oily! (P.S: don't put Aloe directly on your hair, it will be a sticky mess!)
